EVERGLOW YIREN RETURN TO CHINA DUE TO RACIST CONTROVERSY
EVERGLOW will temporarily be promoting with five members as Yiren takes a break from activities. The group Will Temporarily Promote As Five Members. The agency said Yiren has to go to China from mid-January to the end of February due to her academic status, so she will be taking a break there for a while to spend time with her family, whom she hasn’t seen in a long time because of COVID-19.
During the time stated above, EVERGLOW will continue their domestic activities with five members, and carry out their schedule as planned.
As people already notice that there is sensitive issues going on between South Korea and China right now, that many people in South Korea boycott china product or even the people there. No wonder, there are several racist bias treatment that the Chinese idols receive in South Korea after 2020. If you're looking back on what happened to Girl Planet 999, where chinese trainees get a lot of hate and harsh treatment from the staff of mnet, it is so sickening.
EVERGLOW members decided to respectfully greet their fans for the New Year. Out of the 6 EVERGLOW members, 5 of them bowed down to fans on their hands and knees in the traditional Korean greeting of keun jeol. However, member Yiren, the team's only Chinese member, did not bow in the Korean method, and instead greeted fans with a traditional-style Chinese greeting of putting one's hands together.
Korean netizens reacted to the issue with opposite reactions like, "Now they're making stuff up about there being a 'tradition' of Chinese people not going down on their knees?", "By tomorrow the Chinese will probably be like, 'Keun Jeol is a Chinese tradition~'", "She's too proud to do something respectful for her Korean fans", "Now you can head right back to the country you came from", "I've seen plenty of other Chinese idols doing Keun Jeol or getting down on their knees", etc.
Most Chinese people don’t do a way of bowing where you prostrate yourself so your head, knees, and arms touch the ground. Except towards their ancestors (once also towards the Emperor) because it’s a form of utmost reverence. Nowadays, most people only kowtow when they marry as they kowtow towards their parents, the heavens, and each other. To be expected to do that towards fans who are strangers would be strange or uncomfortable for many Chinese people, or heck, many other kinds of people.
