KPOP AGENCIES 2023 PROJECT AND UPDATES OF THEIR IDOLS
In the midst of the escalating legal battle between LOONA and Blockberry Creative, South Korean entertainment giants such as SM Entertainment, HYBE, and Kakao Entertainment are making significant moves to expand their global presence, with a keen focus on the North American market.
In a strategic push to bolster their international footprint, HYBE recently unveiled 'The Debut: Dream Academy,' a global girl group audition program. This groundbreaking initiative attracted 120,000 applicants worldwide, with 20 finalists vying for auditions primarily through social media platforms. HYBE's foray into the global market was not sudden but rather part of a well-thought-out plan that had been in the works for about two years. The company, which established HYBE America back in April 2019, has been actively strengthening its North American presence through subsidiaries like SB Project, Schoolboy Records, and Big Machine Label Group.
Similarly, SM Entertainment and Kakao Entertainment have been diligently working to expand their global reach. Kakao Entertainment's significant investment in SM Entertainment earlier this year marked the beginning of an enhanced partnership between the two entertainment giants. They established a local integrated corporation in North America in August, leveraging SM Entertainment's global Intellectual Property (IP) and production capabilities alongside Kakao Entertainment's extensive music and album distribution network and multi-label system.
Jang Yoon-joong, the newly appointed CEO of Kakao Entertainment America, emphasized the importance of this North American integrated corporation in accelerating the global expansion and growth of SM artists and Kakao Entertainment. This collaboration spans music promotion, artist development, IP planning, production, and distribution.
These strategic moves reflect a pivotal shift in vision for HYBE, Kakao Entertainment, and SM Entertainment, aiming to extend their reach beyond the Korean K-pop market and solidify their influence in the heart of the global music industry, the United States.
Notably, industry insiders are observing a gradual shift in the K-pop market's main consumer base from Asia to North America. The ongoing expansion efforts of these entertainment powerhouses into the North American market are poised to impact K-pop's growing global influence significantly. As LOONA and Blockberry Creative navigate their legal battles, the broader K-pop industry is evolving and adapting to new global dynamics, making it a critical time for fans and stakeholders alike to watch how these developments unfold.
