Today, GFRIEND suddenly rose to top and become the most trending topic both on twitter and naver. It's because there is a news that GFRIEND is actually part ways with their agency, Source music.
GFriend is a six-member South Korean girl group formed by Source Music in 2015. The group consists of Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB, and Umji. Yuju is the main vocalist of the group while SinB is the dancer line, as well as visual. K-pop girl group GFRIEND is leaving their agency Source Music, six years after their debut. All of the 6 members of GFRIEND are no longer renewing their contracts with Source Music. The group's contact will expire on May 22.Previously, BTS's label Big Hit Entertainment just announced that it has acquired Source Music, a Korean entertainment company that houses the K-pop girl group GFriend. This making the company souce music as a subsidiary under Hybe Labels, Hybe Corp.'s subdivision of labels, and keeping its existing management and style. It was revealed that a joint girl group between Source Music and Big Hit Music is expected to debut in 2021 from PLUS Global Audition. GFRIEND & SOURCE MUSIC will follow separates paths.
In the meantime, Gfriend was the most searched Artist on MelOn in the past 24 hours [May 18] with over 30K number of searches. Fans are curious whether they will have all the GFRIEND members to perform together again or they will eventually moved to HYBE. Only time can tell.
On May 18, reports revealed the agency submitted an application to own the trademarks for the name "GFriend" in both Korean and English at the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
The applications reportedly cite the trademarks for GFriend in Korean back to January of 2015 and GFriend in English from March of 2020 onwards. This move might affect GFRIEND as a group, since they won't be able to use the name again after leaving source music. . It's now being reported GFriend's digital content scheduled for May 18 and 19th as well as their entire schedule after the 17th have been deleted.
Fans were already questioning what the trademark of GFriend's name could mean for the members' future promotions, and the unexpected cancellation of GFriend's scheduled content has also caused some concern. Many are expressing disappointment that nothing was disclosed to fans before the changes.
