PRODUCE 101 PARTICIPANT WHO SUPPOSED TO DEBUT WITHOUT MANILUPATION
On November 18, the trial of appeals was held for the “Produce 101” series manipulation case. The Mnet vote manipulation investigation is a 2019 South Korean entertainment scandal involving electoral fraud in several reality competition series produced and broadcast by the television channel Mnet.
PD (producing director) Ahn Joon Young received a sentence of two years along with a fine, and CP (chief producer) Kim Yong Bum received a sentence of one year and eight months.
Assistant PD “Lee” and five entertainment agency representatives, who were previously sentenced fines, have now also received prison sentences of eight months suspended for two years.
Shin DongA published a report by music critic Kim Do Heon about the “Produce 101” vote manipulation controversy, the power of CJ ENM and its network Mnet in the industry, and more. An entertainment industry source stated, “There are hardly any idol agencies that don’t try to pull strings with Mnet. Mnet’s the one that leads the trends in the idol market and Mnet’s also the one that sees the biggest benefits from that.” The report states that the reveal of the manipulation has sent people in the industry as well as idol trainees into a state of shock. The greatest positive aspect of the “Produce” series was initially seen as its platform for a “fair competition,” with social status or wealth not coming into play.
From the moment the issue was raised, Mnet has been discussing compensation for the affected trainees mnet could identify. Some of the discussions are complete, while others are still ongoing.
The court revealed the list of contestants who were eliminated due to manipulation, commenting, “The harmed trainees being revealed through a fair criminal trial can be the starting point towards them receiving true compensation for damages.” It has been decided that the contestants who benefited from the manipulation will not be revealed as they were not aware of the manipulation happening, and revealing their names could additionally cause harm to them. Mnet respects the court’s decision and humbly accepts their ruling.
The contestants who were eliminated as a result of manipulation are as follows:
“Produce 101” (first round of voting): Kim Su Hyun, Seo Hye Lin
Produce 101 Season 2” (first round of voting): Seong Hyun Woo (LIMITLESS’s A.M)
“Produce 101 Season 2” (fourth round of voting): Kang Dong Ho (NU’EST’s Baekho)
