For the first time, it focus more into Asian culture, especially the east Asian (China). This story doesn't tell about the prince charming, but more about family struggle with each other and the teenage days. This movies kinda feels like encanto, but just different culture. Of course, Disney films are very close to family values. In the film, almost all family members have a role in controlling Meilin's emotions.
And for you Kpop fans who like BTS, one of the character in Turning red actually inspired by BTS. the film's director, Domee Shi, has now confirmed that the character was indeed inspired by BTS in an interview as reported by Peruvian media 'Trome'.
Turning Red director Dormee Shi also claims that she gives a personal touch to the film. According to the Academy Award -winning director, the Meilin school building, the film’s main character, was inspired by the layout of the school building. They designed the May school building similar to a school in urban Toronto to create a realistic animation. Mee Shi says that the film does derive inspiration from boybands all through history and adds that "we definitely get a K-pop boyband nod to BTS with Taeyoung in the movie."
The movie Turning Red teaches us to always accept ourselves. In this way, self-confidence will emerge. Mee Shi also mentioned that Turning Red is a bit different from other Pixar films in terms of character portrayal. The animation in the film is claimed to be more expressive like most Japanese anime films. "I watched anime since I was little. I really like seeing how they play emotions so quickly and freely―how they can change emotions in a short time," said Shi, as quoted by Antara. However, Shi doesn't abandon the Pixar hallmark of showing mood swings through color and texture.
