KPOP GROUP THAT HAS CHANGED THEIR NAMES BEFORE
Let's be honest, it's very crucial for a group to be known with their group name. After all for general public, many of them will know as little as the group name, than all individual names of the members. It's pretty rare for general public to be able to pint point who is who in a group. Yes, there is a rare occasion where general public known all the members name, but it's only happened to a legendary group like SNSD/Girls generation or BTS. Most of the time, the name of a KPop group will reflect the unique character of the group. The agency that oversees of course will think and prepare carefully for the name of their new debuted group. The agency sometimes even going to take legal action and create a copyright for the use of that names, so the idols or them members themselves couldn't use it.
However, it turns out that there are several KPop groups that had changed their group names for certain reasons. Check it out!
1. HIGHLIGHT
This Kpop boy group was originally introduced to the public as B2ST under Cube Entertainment and consists of six members. Ahead of their debut in October 2009, the agency changed the name of this group to BEAST. Maybe to make general public able to pronounce the group name better. After their 7 years contract expired,a a the end of 2016, the members decided to end their contract with CUBE. It is known than, one of the member, hyunseung doesn't get along with the other Beast members. 5 of BEAST member than decide to move on and create their own agency, Around Us entertainment. Due to battle of copyright use of their group name "BEAST", who is owned by CUBE and didn't plan to let go, The members decide to change the name of the group to HIGHLIGHT. They're re-debut as HIGHLIGHT and able to make several comeback, yet didn't able to get their prime popularity back. Due to the departure of two members, HIGHLIGHT now has four members, consisting of Yoon Doojoon, Yang Yoseob, Lee Gikwang, and Son Dongwoon. Rapper-songwriter Yong Junhyung has withdrawn from boy band HIGHLIGHT, formerly known as BEAST, amid a series of crimes shaking the South Korean entertainment world. Yong is the fourth known celebrity involved in a widespread series of investigations into corrupt and illicit practices in the Korean entertainment and nightlife industries, and potential corruption in police forces. Yong Junhyung has announced his departure from Highlight. On March 14, he took to his Instagram to apologize and explain the situation regarding the one-on-one chat he had with Jung Joon Young in 2015.
2. BLACKSWAN
Rania formerly known as BP Rania (shortened from “Black Pearl Rania“) consisted, in the last part of their career, of 4 members: Hyeme, Seonghyun, Youngheun and Larissa.
under DR Music. On June 26, 2020, Hyeme announced via Instagram that the group would rebrand as B.S. (Black Swan) with 2 new members: Fatou and Judy, whilst Seunghyun would leave the group, RaNia officially disbanding.
Hyeme debuted with the girl group Rania in 2015, and after many lineup changes, the group recently re-debuted as Black Swan on October 16. Their continuous change and re-debut explain as this: RANIA > BP. RANIA > BLACK SWAN
3. ONEWE
4. Dreamcatcher
This girl group originally consisted of five members, namely JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, and Dami. The five of them are members of a group called MINX and debuted through a single titled "Why Did You Come to My Home?" on 18 September 2014. Unfortunately, despite the abundant talents, the group didn't able to create a good buzz and popularity for themselves. The agency thought that they need to make a change and decide to put two additional members.Because Handong and Gahyeon joined the group, they made their debut again on January 13, 2017 and changed their group name to Dreamcatcher.
5. TO1
This group was originally formed through a survival program entitled "World Klass" which was held at the end of 2019. When appearing on the KCON: TACT 3 program on March 28, 2021, the group officially announced the change of their group name to TO1 which stands for TOgether as ONE.
Previously, this ten-member group was known as TOO, which was defined as the Ten Oriented Orchestra.
6. TREASURE
At first, the YG Treasure Box survival program, which was held at the end of 2018, formed a boy group of seven members named TREASURE. A few days later, YG Entertainment announced a new group called MAGNUM which consists of six members.
These two sub groups were introduced to the public under the name TREASURE13. When a MAGNUM member decided to leave the group, the agency also combined these two groups into one that we know as TREASURE today.
