FULL LIST OF KPOP IDOLS WHO HAVE DEPRESSION IN THEIR LIFE

I'm not an expert for mental health, but because of the recent movie "Joker" that tells about mental health come to light, people are begin to search and understand more about this. Being a Kpop idols might be a dream for some, but without a doubt, it's also a job with a lot of pressure and never ending competition with over saturated market. Below are several Kpop idols who have talked about depression that they have or showing a little bit of sign of mental sickness, here is the list:

Snsd Taeyeon

Taeyeon always  tell and share about what she felt with the fans, toward her private instagram and latest youtube channel. She is kinda open about it and turn this into a "muse" of her art creating process. She create a SM club of depression people along with her friends, like heecheul, lee teuk, jonghyun and more. The idols often get millions of hate comments everyday since Girls generation debut, yet she has proven that it won't let her down and keep going up with her career.

Super junior lee teuk
On November 24, Leeteuk spoke at an event called, "There's No Hope without Despair," where Leeteuk shared what had happened to his family and his financial situation. Leeteuk gave a speech at a high school in Kyungjoo, South Korea where he opened up about his depression and his father’s last spiteful words to him.

Leeteuk recalled of a time back in January of 2014, when his father and grandparents passed away, saying, "While I was in the mandatory military service, I was struggling with depression, and I heard the news of the family death news; it was a very difficult period. Media and police reports at the time confirmed that it was a murder-suicide. Leeteuk’s father and grandparents had been found dead in their residency, on the 6th of January 2014.

Leeteuk's shocking revelation did not end there. His father had left a debt of about 5 Billion KR (~$4.25 million USD). In order to pay off his late father's debt, Leeteuk sold his car, increased his workload and only slept about 4 hours in 3 days to fit all the schedules into each day, even though he could have been freed from the responsibility of paying off the money if he had given up the legal inheritance responsibility. Leeteuk said that he is still continuing to pay towards the debt, without resenting his father, and to do what is ethically right

2Am Jokwon
Fans were surprised to find out that Jo Kwon suffered from severe depression during the 8 years he spent as a trainee. He pushed through it, however, and was able to rise above it. His determination and willpower has only continued to grow since his debut. He spoke earlier this year about his new solo career with Cube Entertainment (after leaving JYP Entertainment after 16 years) and said he has a new-found drive at 30. “I’m not too bothered by criticism and rumors. I want to become an artist who can use [criticism] as a great influence rather than being stressed over it. I hope there are people who gain confidence and courage by seeing me.”

Super junior hee cheul
You would never think the happy, sarcastic and fun Heechul had his fair share of depression and pain. When his close friend Hankyung left Super Junior, Heechul spiraled into a depressive cycle, closing himself off from his friends for over 3 months. Thankfully he was able to find love and support from his members to move forward and heal from his pain.

Shinee jonghyun
“It’s been too hard. Please send me off. Tell everyone I’ve had a hard time. Tell me I did well. This is my last goodbye.”

These were the final words of Kim Jonghyun, main vocalist of the popular K-Pop group SHINee, sent as a text to his older sister before he committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Suzy
Suzy is a successful idols turn actress who received a lot of love and cf offers. She confessed on TV in 2013 that she suffered from a severe case of depression. She said, “I have something like depression and I couldn’t tell anyone for a while. I even began to think I couldn’t last another day. One day, I was chatting with my friend and laughing at a joke and all of a sudden I began crying.”

IU
She sang her songs that were huge hits in 2014 and then spoke honestly about how she felt during that year.  IU said, "That was the year lots of people liked me.  But in one way, I felt weird and grew depressed.  It made me wonder if I deserved such compliments.  "I was unable to enjoy those compliments and, if anything, while pondering over it, I started to disparage myself.  It was the year with the best conditions for my happiness, but I couldn't trust myself that year and had a hard time.  It was hard for me to promote.

"And that is how I got insomnia.  I couldn't sleep at all, so I was unable to properly do the things I had to during the daytime.  That's why I was dispirited and in a vicious, repetitive cycle."

IU revealed that she would be speaking frankly about her family and her past for the first time through KBS's 'Win Win'. On December 13th, IU finally shared some stories about her past, which was impacted by poverty. According to producers, IU said, "When I was younger, I had no choice but to live separately from my parents because we were so impoverished. I lived with my grandmother, a cousin, and my younger brother for a year and a half in a studio room." She continued, "The room was always cold and there was never enough food to eat.

We were barely able to live by on money my grandmother made from selling small hair accessories at the market. I rarely met with or spoke to my parents and consoled myself whenever I felt lonely that I still had my grandmother." Because of the poor conditions of her home, IU confessed that she liked spending time at the rehearsal room than her own home. "Instead of my lonely and cold home, I liked my rehearsal studio better. More than anything, I was glad to be able to eat as much as I could and sleep in a warm bed at night." A year before her debut, IU revealed that she had been dropped from 20 different auditions and had even been tricked into being involved in fraudulent activities.

Kara Go Hara
Since the news of Goo Hara‘s attempted suicide, fans have grown extremely worried about her current state of being. While nothing has been updated about her status yet, her manager, in an anonymous interview with Korean press, shared that Goo Hara has recently been battling depression.

Goo Hara has gone through a series of controversies since September of 2018. Her ex-boyfriend and she got involved in a long, exhausting legal battle over date abuse. She also parted ways with her agency Keyeast Entertainment earlier in 2019. In April of 2019, she faced netizen criticism about her decision to undergo double eyelid surgery for ptosis correction.

Sulli
The singer and actor, who was the victim of online bullying, had severe depression. Sulli, who debuted at age 11 in 2005, has spoken of how the rumors and public expectations constrained her life. “When I met people in the past, even before saying hello, I felt like I should explain myself: This isn’t who I am! The rumors aren’t true!” she said recently on a TV show, “The Night of Hate Comments,” on which she was one of the hosts. Hair dyed pink, Sulli read hate comments about herself on the show, in a format reminiscent of Jimmy Kimmel’s “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets.” She often giggled and acted nonchalant as she read the obnoxious posts.

After news of her death emerged, many have focused on the potential role of online harassment. But whatever the complex reasons that led to Sulli’s death, it’s superficial to focus just on cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is only a symptom of a society that is intolerant of people who dare to be different from the mold.

Sulli’s death matters because it’s a brutal wake-up call. Her death reminds Koreans of the still-pervasive misogyny directed at “unconventional” women, who are brave enough to be irreverent, show the outline of their nipples through their shirts and value their own minds above being liked.

G dragons
After successfully completing his 'Act III: Motte' world tour, G-Dragon revealed a series of behind-the-scenes footages from his concert on Instagram. The post features a dark image of what appears to be the singer, with a confusing message written on top.  “I want to hide in a place that makes me comfortable,” the post states, without any clarification. It isn't a secret for his fans that G dragon has battle his depression these past years. This isn't the first time, G-Dragon had discussed his struggles with fame and identity. He illustrated his loneliness and explored his deep psyche in his latest EP album 'Kwon Ji Yong' with the track "Super Star", in addition to his past Instagram post where he posted a photo with the saying "I can't handle people anymore", perhaps longing for escape and healing.

Baro
He fell into depression when he realized that he would not be able to see his fellow cast members anymore due to the fact that they all had busy schedules. He has since been reunited with co-star Son Ho Joon in Law of the Jungle and Friends and the two even traveled to Laos together with Yoo Yeon Suk for the variety show Youth Over Flowers. Baro’s battle with depression was, thankfully, short-lived.

After school lizzy
Lizzy was a special guest on the June 19 episode of 'Radio Star'. On the program, the topic of her leaving 'Running Man' was brought up and Lizzy said, "I got depressed after leaving 'Running Man'. At first, I was just a guest, but I thought I did well because I eventually joined the cast and became a permanent member. But even then, I was edited out a lot from the scenes, and articles were popping up saying I wasn't a permanent cast member but just a long-term guest."

She added, "After I left, people asked me, 'Were you fired from Running Man?'. I left because of my schedules filming for a sitcom, but I was hurt because of the response I was getting. I think I was even more upset because it was my first variety show in which I was a permanent member."Lizzy concluded, "I had a hard time back then, but I'm fine now. Also, Yoo Jae Suk oppa talked positively about me after the Entertainment Daesang, so I was completely good after that."

Twice Mina

Fans of South Korean girl group Twice will not be able to cheer on member Mina when they perform at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Saturday (July 13).

She is "struggling with sudden extreme anxiety and insecurity towards performing on stage", a statement from their agency stated. "After extensive discussion with Mina and members of Twice, we have decided that Mina's current condition requires additional treatment, professional measures and sufficient rest," the statement added. Currently Mina has been absence from Twice future activities.

BTS Suga
One of the most talented and famed rappers, Suga revealed his battle with depression during a radio show in 2014. He talked about his struggle with his body image and being good enough to be an idol. In "Agust D" he addressed several mental health issues such as depression, OCD, and social anxiety. But ultimately Suga has been able to get professional help which is great for him. In his 2016 mixtape, Suga, from boy band BTS, referred to his own struggles with fame and identity.

Other idols who also fight mental health issues are:
TOP, Ahn ji young, BAP members, Red velvet yeri, Wendy, Jonghy Nam tae hyun, Taecyeon, Key Shinee, aoa Choa and more!

In 2017 ChoA, from girl group AOA, left her band due to battles with insomnia and depression. Even after treatment, ChoA has said she never really feels at peace. Rapper Woo Won-jae, who rose to fame on the hip-hop program Show Me the Money, stands out due to his dark lyrics which address his difficulties with depression and loneliness.
