[DISC] MANY KPOP GROUPS WHO TRIED TO BREAK THE US BUT FAILED MISERABLY
Let be honest, we know that during years many Big agency send their most promising group to re-debut in other country outside Korea, trying to get "some luck" and another source of income outside their home country. In my generation, there is BoA, who start it all and try to pursue a career in US entertainment industry. She is the one who paved the way for all other SM entertainment group, the originator of the biggest agency in South korea. There might be some change in ranking of the top 3, yet SM steadily defend its position to be always in the top 3.
But even from this big agency like SM entertainment and with their most successful idols/talents, all their pursues have gone to some mediocre achievement in the US.
If we see in history, it will be like this:
1. BoA, the rising star, the dark horse, already well received both in South Korea and Japan, having US debut with the most reaching promotion, "Eat you Up MV". Too bad, even with all the cheesy English lyrics that is trying to be sensual, it didn't work out.
Well, Sm might want to try their luck again with the promising boy group, TVXQ/DBSK who already out reach from any competitor at that time. Trust me, DBSK is on a whole other level than the rest boy group in their prime time. Yet, with 3 out of 5 members from DBSK took legal approach to break their "unjustified contract", hit SM really bad.
So we have another challenger and it comes from another TOP 3 agency, JYP:
2. Wonder girls, from JYP is a rising group that in their prime time is consider "the biggest threat" for SNSD/Girls' generation. Or more likely, in "Tell me" or "No body" era, WG (Wonder Girls) is outdone SNSD. JYP released the english version of hit song, "No Body", and other language version (including chinese and japanese), promote in the US shows and even do tour for several months. JYP really took risk since they were kinda forgot to do any activities in South korea and only focusing the US. Steadily, WG loose their appeal and popularity in South korea, while get nothing satisfying in the US. This problem break loose some of the members mental health and made WG loose 2 of the original members (actually only 1, since Hyuna dropped because of health issues before WG even debut in US), then replacing it with a new additional members because JYP thought that WG is 5 members idol group, not 4.
3. Then we have SM tried their luck again with "SNSD/Girls' Geneartion", the same generation idol group with Wonder girls. With a fierce battle going on between SNSD and 2ne1 in South korea, SM tried not to focus only in US, but also in South Korea and Japan at the same time. Learning by other agency mistake, JYP-WG, SM tried to promote in the US with SNSD most expensive MV "The boys", working together with US music producer Teddy riley, of course, after they successfully made another come back in their beloved home country, South Korea. SNSD made some recognizable achievement like appearing in Late Show with David Letterman, also hold a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. They're the first group to achieve that much feed and buzz in the US. Unfortunately, they don't get much positive reaction from US public, many people in US think that SNSD is just "another cheerleader group" with too much members, pretty common face and without individual appeal.
4. 2NE1, from YG (another BIG 3), tried their luck to in US. Many netizens thought that it's pretty reasonable that SM group failed, because the style is different to what US people like. And this is why 2ne1 will prevail, with the kind of genre/music style that US people would like. Unfortunately, it wasn't the case. They made some promotion in the US following what SNSD has done, yet their hype goes down pretty quickly without much sustainable impact. CL, the leader and the greatest rapper from the group 2ne1 tried to do a solo promotion in the US, yet still not get a satisfying result from it.
