WHAT TO EXPECT IN MAMA 2021
Who doesn't know about MAMA, the prestigious award owned by CJ ENM or MNET has been held for year, usually overseas. This year tho, because of pandemic and COVID-19 situation, it will be held exclusively in South Korea. There are several changes than previous award, the evaluation criteria and categories will also be different this year. Unlike in previous years, fan votes will not be one of the criteria for determining the Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year awards. However, the Worldwide Icon of the Year and Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10 awards will be determined entirely through fan votes, with no other criteria. We already know how ambitious the project is.
Centering around the concept “Make Some Noise,” this year’s MAMA will be held offline with an in-person audience. Mnet’s CP (chief producer) Park Chan Wook explained, “We won’t be able to invite many people to the audience, but we believe it’s a big change that the artists and the audience are meeting. It will be carried out in accordance with the government’s disease prevention guidelines.”
Kim Hyun Soo, head of CJ ENM’s Music Content Division, revealed their plans to one day hold MAMA in the United States. He explained, “We will expand the host countries to the Asian market and other close-by regions and later host MAMA in the United States. While centering around K-pop, we will invite celebrities who represent South Korea in film, drama, and K-lifestyle and strength communication with the generation between ages 15 and 24, showcase unique content based on storytelling, and strengthen the global data that reflects the rising status of K-pop.”
Some hot issues that will happen in this prestigious MAMA award including the long awaited reunion from WANNA ONE. CP Park Chan Wook shared, “The members are full of anticipation. The production team is preparing with various ideas in mind. We’ll create a stage that’s like a gift for fans.” While CJ ENM did not manage to reunite all 11 members of the project group, it did succeed in reuniting 10 members except Lai Kuan Lin for the special stage performance. As fans already know that Lai Kua lin is on legal battle with his Korean agency, so it makes him hard to join the reunion. d CJ ENM is currently in talks with all members to expand their reunion group activities to include holding a concert and releasing new albums. However, some labels are against the proposal. One of agency who openly against the proposal is PLEDIS ENTERTAINMENT. They said that it is just one special project only for MAMA. The label added Minhyun is busy preparing for the NU'EST's concert which will be held in Seoul from November 26th to the 28th, as well as filming his drama series. It was also reported Ong Seong Wu was one of the members who had a hard time deciding to reunite as Wanna One due to his busy schedule filming a new Netflix movie.
Well, Wanna one reunion isn't the only special stage for MAMA 2021. Other special performances are performances by the eight crews of “Street Woman Fighter” and a collaboration stage between members of top fourth generation K-pop groups.
